What is the product of the net ionic equation?

If hydrochloric acid and potassium hydrocide react, what is the product of the net ionic equation for the reaction? How do you know?

First write out the reaction equation:

HCl(aq) + KOH(aq) -------> KCl(aq) + H₂O(l)

Now write the ionic equation:

H+(aq) + Cl-(aq) + K+(aq) + OH-(aq) -------> K+(aq) + Cl-(aq) + H₂O(l)

To make a net ionic equation, eliminate the terms that appear on both sides:

H+(aq) + OH-(aq) -------> H₂O(l)

Therefore, the answer is 'D,' because water is the product of the net ionic equation.

It's hard to always know what the products will be. You have to use a solubility chart. Certain ions react to form a solid precipitate. If you don't recognize them, and you cancel them out as spectator ions, you will get the wrong product for the net ionic equation. Again, you need a solubility chart. * If something is listed as soluble, it means that ions REMAIN as ions, and they DON'T form a precipitate.

* If something is listed as soluble, it means the ions form a solid precipitate, so in the net ionic equation, you show them as a combined SOLID, and NOT ions.
